The name and the inspiration for The Olive Branch comes from the song ‘Dance Me to the End of Love’ by Leonard Cohen, specifically the line “Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove”. Lush want to make people feel uplifted and reassured with this shower gel and after all, an olive branch is one of the most famous signs of peace.
Usually when you’re using a product from Lush you expect to be blown away by a strong and heady fragrance, but The Olive Branch is rather subtle, especially compared to other shower gels such as Rose Jam and Dirty Springwash.
The scent is firmly citrus fronted, containing Lemon, Bergamot and Mandarin Oils, as well as the juice from the latter along with Orange Flower Absolute. This concoction of zesty and energising fruity aromas would make The Olive Branch smell a tad similar to typically citrus scented cleaning products you’d find under your kitchen sink if it wasn’t for something in there that’s a little more woody, and somewhat warming and reassuring; most likely from the addition of an infusion made from Vine Leaves. The Mandarin Juice also gives a delicate fruity note!
A big component of this product is the great amount of antioxidant Fair Trade Olive Oil which moisturises and nourishes the skin with essential vitamins. You can really feel it in the consistency and when it’s on your skin and I love using it during summer to battle any dryness from too much sun!
The citrus oils it contains are expertly cleansing and the Fresh Mandarin Juice has a brightening effect for the skin, leaving it fresh and revitalised. The Olive Branch actually lathers up really well and ensures you are effortlessly clean. Furthermore, the Vine Leaf Infusion and the aforementioned Olive Oil have great soothing and conditioning properties, calming any inflammation or redness you may be suffering with.
I really love The Olive Branch and it’s potentially my favourite shower gel out of the current year round range. The scent, although simple is really lovely. I just wish it had more staying power after you’ve used it!
