The idea of Boom! originally scared me a little. Reading the ingredients list, you’ve got Charcoal, Chilli, Gunpowder Tea and Black Pepper? Honestly it doesn’t seem like something I’d want to put in my mouth and especially not to clean my teeth? Nevertheless Boom! does seem to be pretty popular, and you do see rave reviews over other charcoal toothpastes.
Like the rest of Lush’s Toothy Tabs, Boom! contains Dicalcium Phosphate Anhydrous and Sodium Bicarbonate for their plaque removing properties and their ability to increase the alkalinity inside the mouth, creating an environment that is hostile for bacterial growth. However the Charcoal and Sea Salt content of Boom! gently polishes and cleanses the teeth also! Charcoal containing toothpastes are on the rise because of how great they are at removing stains and therefore whitening the teeth. Boom! further contains an odd sounding product called Gunpowder Tea, which is a type of green tea. The leaves from this plant are rich in antioxidants that are great for improving the health of the mouth and gums. It gets its name from the shape of the leaves because when rolled into tiny black pellets, they can be mistaken for gunpowder grains.
It’s the Charcoal that gives the product it’s black colour, and it’s a strange feeling when you see your mouth turn black when you’re using one of these tabs but there’s also a sense of fun too, so I reckon Boom would make a great product to get those young teens to brush their teeth!
Boom! is meant to taste like cola, and to be fair, it kinda does. Boom! contains zesty Persian Lime Oil, liquorice-tasting Aniseed Oil, spicy Black Pepper Oil, vanillary Benzoin Resinoid with a small amount of Ground Chilli and even simply reading those ingredients, you can see how they’d make up a similar taste to cola. It’s an odd taste, yet it’s really not bad at all, Lush have added Sorbitol as a sweetener and it’s actually pretty good once you get used to it. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol derived from corn syrup, but despite this it doesn’t have any harmful affects on the teeth.
The only problem with Boom! is that due to its colour, it can be a tad messy and can stain clothing and leave black marks on your sink. If it happens, don’t worry as its easily wiped away and washed out of fabrics but it can be annoying. Just be careful when you’re brushing your teeth I guess.
I’m actually enjoying using Boom! at the moment, I’m already starting to notice my teeth looking brighter with just a weeks worth of uses and it leaves my mouth and breath feeling clean and fresh. I’d happily purchase them again!
