Calavera Bath Bomb and Calacas Shower Gel kinda go hand in hand. A calaca is the name of a figure of a skeleton that’s often used for decoration in the Mexican ‘Día de los Muertos’ or ‘Day of the Dead’ festival. A calavera is the term applied to the decorative skulls you often see around at the time of the festival. Both products also feature the same refreshing and vibrant scent.
The Calacas scent is one of my favourites from Lush and is so unique and moreish. It reminds me of sugary sweets mixed with fresh zesty lime juice, the perfect mix between sweet and citrusy sour. It’s actually a trio of Lime, Neroli and Olibanum which make up the iconic scent. Lime Oil is the ultimate zingy ingredient for a product with Mexican inspiration with Neroli Oil adding a fresh green note yet still with citrus undertones. Olibanum Resinoid is also known as frankincense and has a woody, refreshing and meditative scent. It’s had an important role in religions throughout the centuries to ward off evil spirits, another ingredient that’s perfect for this bath bomb!
Lime and Neroli are perfect for cleansing, toning and refreshing the skin whilst Olibanum is protective and soothing.
I find that the scent of Calavera is much stronger than Monsters Ball from Halloween, or is that just me?
Marigold Flowers are often used as decorations around the Mexican festival to honour the dead and attract their souls, so Lush have included their petals inside Calavera too for that authentic feel.
Once popped in the bath, I was surprised at how nothing seemed to happen. The bomb foamed up slightly but was eerily silent whilst it was doing so and I sat there for a good few minutes just watching the foam slowly expand. Before too long, the inner core was infiltrated and out shot a bright stream of neon yellow from the centre. It danced atop the water creating patterns and intertwined with a blue colour that had started to make itself known from inside. Once the silent display had finished, a vibrant green/yellow water was left behind, very reminiscent of the shower gel, with small petals floating throughout. I must say the smell of the scent during the fizz was incredibly strong!
I got in the bath and I felt instantly enlivened and energised. Calavera also contains Granulated Sugar which is great at softening the skin and helping to lock in moisture. Once I was out I was impressed and glad that the scent was remaining on my skin and I was noticing it there up until I went to bed a good 4/5 hours later.
In conclusion, I loved Calavera and I’d definitely use it again and again! My only wish would be that the petals were perhaps more vibrant in colour? Though I know that’s not really something easily changed. I’m happy my Calacas needs are fulfilled once more!
