Lush love a pun don’t they? Pirates of The Carrageenan is one of the many bath bombs originally starting off as a Harajuku store exclusive, but then made its way into the 30th anniversary selection too.
The scent isn’t actually a brand new one for Lush, as it’s been seen before in the Supertramp Bubble Bar and Shower Gel. I’ve not actually tried either of those products so I can’t exactly tell you how true to the OG scent it is. But it’s an earthy and mossy fragrance of Petitgrain, Pimento Berry, Patchouli, Sandalwood and Ginger.
The overarching note of the bath bomb is that of the earthy Patchouli, which is known for its meditative and grounding effects on the mind. Sandalwood and Petitgrain add woody and fresh green notes, enhancing the very ‘natural’ note that reminds me (pleasantly) of damp woodland. Ginger and Pimento Berry add an undertone of spice and a warmth to the scent that really round it off. It’s a scent that’s fairly unusual but is also very attractive.
Ginger and Pimento Berry, due to their spicy nature have warming and stimulating effects on the skin, perfect for easing knots and tension. Pirates of The Carrageenan also contains Carrageenan Extract, as the name suggests, as well as Kombu Powder. Both of these ingredients are derived from different types of seaweeds and seaweed is one of the best ingredients to nourish, soothe, soften and hydrate the skin. The high content of both of these ingredients in this bath bomb really soften the water.
Pirates of The Carrageenan is rather robust and fairly heavy, but still manages to float on the surface of the water. The bath bomb started off by foaming and frothing before settling into a steady and slow fizz whilst different shades of green created gorgeous patterns. Before long the yellow core revealed itself, much like gold within a treasure chest and intertwined with the green. The yellow insert is actually filled with a tonne of glitter and once the display had finished, the amount of golden lustre floating throughout the green looked stunning.
As I got in, I immediately felt the sheer softness of the water. The 6% carrageenan and 1.5% kombu content really makes a difference and almost thickens the water, though nowhere near the same extent as a jelly bomb does. My skin was loving being nourished and I didn’t even need to wait until I was out to notice the effects.
Once I was out, indeed my skin did feel heavenly soft and smooth and remained that way for the rest of my evening. The scent however, due to it’s strength, lingered across my skin even until the next day when I could still notice it faintly on my arms! The golden glitter had also beautifully decorated my body, and also my bath, though it’s easily washed away down the plughole.
In conclusion, Pirates of The Carrageenan is a wonderful bath bomb and a must try if you’re into earthy, meditative scents. Even if you’re just looking for a pamper, I’d urge you to try out this product just for how good it makes your skin feel.
