Birth Of Venus Jelly Face Mask

Each one of the five jelly masks have a unique name inspired by five women who work for the company. Lush co-founder Rowena Bird recently won the National Venus Award in the UK which recognises and celebrates British business women. Birth of Venus is dedicated to her.

As a whole, the jelly masks have a certain hydrating quality because of what they’re made from. Like with all of Lush’s jelly products, the soft and wobbly texture comes from the addition of Carrageenan Extract, derived from a type of seaweed. Anything with seaweed in it is going to be great at adding moisture, softening the skin, and soothing any irritation.

Birth of Venus contains some other incredibly soothing ingredients too. Its main ingredient is actually Fresh Rose Petal Infusion, which has been chosen for not only its soothing effects but also for its toning and balancing effects. Similarly, Lavender Absolute also has wonderful soothing properties, as well as being balancing and antiseptic. I’d say that Birth of Venus is one of the most balancing products Lush currently have and it’s perfect for anyone who, like myself, struggles with ‘combination’ skin as it really helps to even out the oil production.

This jelly mask also contains soothing and calming Chamomile Blue Oil, cleansing Kaolin which draws out toxins and impurities from the skin, and Fresh Sea Water which is full of many different minerals. Minerals are vital for the skin. They help to maintain water balance and keep the pH of the blood and lymphatic systems stable, which is essential for healthy living.

Birth Of Venus has a gorgeously unique scent. You can detect the floral and herbal elements of the lavender, rose and chamomile but there are grounding resinous notes coming from the addition of Olibanum Oil and Myrrh Resinoid in there too. It’s a very relaxing and fresh ‘spa’ like scent, but I also imagine smoking incense sticks whenever I smell it. Olibanum, otherwise known as Frankincense has toning and soothing properties on the skin and Myrrh also has soothing properties but is also antiseptic.

If you’ve never used a jelly face mask before, you might want to give one a go. I was really unsure when they first came out but now I love them. They’re so easy to use, though they do take a little longer to apply and take off than a regular mask. To apply you need to squidge a grape sized amount into the palm of your hands before smoothing over your face and the best way to take one off is either with a flannel or a damp cotton round rather than just splashing your face with water. Unlike the fresh face masks, these jelly masks are self preserving, which means they last a lot longer and don’t have to be kept in the fridge where you could forget about them!

I think Birth of Venus is my favourite out of the five currently in the all year round range, it leaves my face feeling so soft and matte, perfect for a morning before make up. I love this product!
