Cup O’ Coffee Face and Body Mask

I’m one of those people who cannot survive without coffee. I have to have a cup as soon as I wake up otherwise I won’t make it through the morning, or rather everyone around me won’t. I love the taste, I love the smell, so it comes as no surprise that Cup O’ Coffee is one of my favourite products from Lush and my all-time favourite face mask.

As soon as you crack open the lid, you’re hit with a strong coffee aroma which can put you off if that’s not your cup of tea, or coffee rather. Coffee contains a high amount of caffeine, which is a stimulant to the brain, waking you up and giving you energy if you consume it. Likewise, it is also a stimulant for the skin. Cup O’ Coffee contains an infusion made from coffee beans which boosts circulation to the skin, reviving and brightening the complexion. Lush have also included Caffeine Powder to boost that effect.

Although Cup O’ Coffee is a mask, it contains Ground Coffee which acts as an effective exfoliant when you’re washing it off. It’s actually fairly scrubby on the skin which is perfect for deeply cleansing pores and removing dirt. Ground Coffee is one of the best eco-friendly alternatives to plastic microbeads. I will never understand why companies still continue to use highly damaging ingredients in their products when nature provides an alternative.

This mask actually has a fairly moist and sticky texture due to the addition of Agave Syrup. Like honey, this syrup is highly antibacterial and anti-inflammatory as well was being moisturising for the skin. This definitely makes the scrub a little less harsh and leaves the skin feeling soft and nourished once removed. Also added for their cleansing benefits are Kaolin, which draws out the impurities in the skin, and Bentone Gel which is great for absorbing excess sebum.

Lastly a few other ingredients have been included mostly to enhance the mask’s scent, but each have their own individual properties too. Vanilla Absolute is soothing and antibacterial when applied to the skin. Vanilin, its main aromatic compound, is antioxidant and contributes to restoring skin’s brightness and softness. Coriander Oil and Vetivert Oil are warming and stimulating, contributing to the mask’s main benefits and lastly Roasted Cocoa Extract gives a rich aroma to the product whilst also being soothing.

I love the feeling after using this mask. My skin always feels so smooth and honestly looks noticeably brighter and healthier. Dull skin no more! Furthermore, I often get bored of products and I love changing up my routine but Cup O Coffee is definitely one of my desert island products that I doubt I’ll ever stop using. Do not stop making this product Lush!!

1000 Millihelens Jelly Face Mask

When Lush created their Jelly Masks, each one was dedicated to and named after five of Lush’s most powerful women and this one is named after one of Lush’s co-founders, Helen Ambrosen. The phrase also comes from an Ancient Greek poem, The Iliad, in which Helen Of Troy was said to have had ‘a face that launched a thousand ships’ so a millihelen (which would be enough to launch a single ship) has become a humorous measurement for beauty. 1000 millihelens makes up one whole Helen.

Incase you’ve not come across jelly face masks before, they’re an interesting concept and much like Lush’s shower jellies, each one is created with a base of Carrageenan Extract which gives the masks their squidgy texture. Carrageenan Extract comes from Irish moss seaweed and seaweed is expertly hydrating for the skin, meaning that each one of these unique masks has a fairly moisturising element.

1000 Millihelens is the one that’s been designed to be cleansing, detoxifying and brightening, perfect for anyone trying to prevent breakouts due to its highly antibacterial ingredients.

The two main components of this face mask are a Green Tea Infusion and Fresh Apple Juice. Green tea is thought to be very antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial for the skin and likewise apples are also rich in antioxidants to brighten and refresh the skin also. The malic acid contained in the fruit gently exfoliates the the skin’s top layers leaving it toned and glowing. The Green Tea, along with Chlorophyllin is what gives the product its green colour without the need for any colorants.

This jelly face mask further contains both Kaolin (or china clay) and Zeolite Clay, which are two natural clays that again detoxify the skin by drawing out the impurities, further paving the way for a clean and clear complexion.

img_2785

A couple of essential oils have been added to 1000 Millihelens which each have their own benefits as well as adding to the mask’s scent. Sicilian Lemon and Brazilian Orange Oils are also antiseptic and brightening for the skin, whilst Neroli Oil is toning and soothing. The scent of the mask is mostly dominated by the crisp appley scent with a herbal element from the unmistakable Green Tea Extract, though these essential oils somewhat add a slight fruity note of their own.

Lastly this face mask contains an ingredient that’s well known to those who have trouble fighting spots – Witch Hazel Extract. It’s a common ingredient in skincare because of its ideal ability to maintain clear and healthy skin. It is proven to be incredibly antiseptic, tightening and soothing.

Although they can be messy and annoying to use, I’m a big fan of the jelly face masks. Their self-preserving formula means they last a lot longer than the Fresh Face Masks and you don’t have to keep them in the fridge where they’re easily forgotten about. Also the seaweed content means they don’t really dry on the skin like other face masks can do, they remain the same soft texture all the while that they’re sat on your face.

1000 Millihelens always leaves me with noticeably brighter and softer skin and does wonders at keeping it clear. Check it out for yourself here at the Lush UK website.

Don’t Look At Me Fresh Face Mask

With the name Don’t Look At Me, it’s rather ironic that this is one of Lush’s brightest face masks with it’s bright blue colouring! You can’t not look!

Arguably the best thing about Don’t Look At Me is just how exfoliating it is. Even though it’s a face mask first and foremost, it contains super scrubby around rice to remove dead skin cells when you’re taking it off, just like a face scrub.

Don’t Look At Me has quite a rich, yet wet texture, which means it’s really easy to apply and there aren’t any big chunks like in other face masks. Along with cleansing Kaolin and Glycerine, it actually features a lot of skin softening ingredients. Silken Tofu has a high protein content and lots of vitamins, meaning it’s fantastic for moisturising and improving the condition of skin. Murumuru Butter is also loaded with vitamins and has a high content of deeply moisturising oleic acid. Furthermore, Rice Syrup and Rice Milk have also been added for their soothing and softening properties.

Although I may have made it sound otherwise, I wouldn’t call Don’t Look At Me that moisturising. It’s softening, yes, but I do find it can be slightly drying on my combination skin. It actually features enzymically cleansing Grapefruit Oil, Neroli Oil and a high amount of Fresh Lemon Juice. When something is enzymically cleansing, it means it breaks down any dirt and excess sebum with the help of enzymes, therefore making certain ingredients great at helping break down excess oils on the skin. Lemon Juice is perfect at this as well as being toning and brightening on the skin. I’d definitely recommend this mask to anyone with oilier skin types but if you are using it on drier skin, just make sure you’re using a good moisturiser after.

img_1352

Whenever I use Don’t Look At Me, my skin always feels so smooth and refreshed. The exfoliant works so well, I literally feel like I’m wearing new skin and there’s always a noticeable glow as well, so I love to use Don’t Look At Me before a big event!

However, one thing I really dislike about this mask, is the scent. I think it’s just how sharp the overall citrus aroma is, and mixed with the other ingredients it just doesn’t sit well with my nose. It’s sadly a big reason why I don’t use Don’t Look At Me more often.

Take a look at this fresh face mask here on the Lush UK website!

Cupcake Fresh Face Mask

There’s something strange about the idea of putting chocolate on your face. Even as someone who absolutely loves chocolate, I still don’t particularly want to cover myself in it so naturally I wasn’t overly keen on trying Cupcake Fresh Face Mask.

As soon as you pop open the lid and bring it to your nose, you’re hit with a scent that reminds me of brownie mixture, which to be honest, made me want to put it on my face even less and just eat it instead. Don’t try it, it really doesn’t taste nice.

Cupcake’s base is made from something called Rhassoul Mud, which should put you off eating it. This helps to soften skin and gives a deep cleanse, drawing out dirt and impurities, leaving skin soft and clear. As a natural clay, its super absorbent, drawing out excess sebum, minimising shine and preventing breakouts.

As you can imagine, Cupcake contain’s Cocoa Powder. Thanks to the residue of cocoa butter Cocoa Powder contains, it is really effective at softening the skin. It also contains a high amount of antioxidants, which are compounds made by plants to prevent premature breakdowns of their cells caused by exposure to atmospheric agents like air, heat and sunlight. These antioxidants benefit skin as well so they protect your skin from premature aging! Cupcake also contains a generous helping of actual Cocoa Butter also to hydrate your skin so it’s not left feeling too dry.

img_0689

When Cupcake is actually on your face, you can immediately feel your skin being nourished by its beneficial ingredients. Mint and Cedarwood are balancing for the skin, sorting out any excess oil issues and a soothing infusion from Linseed (Flaxseed) help with any redness or irritation. Although it’s the same texture as a brownie batter, you’re safe in the knowledge that it’s cleansing and clarifying your skin, not making breakouts worse!

Cupcake is actually perfect for hormonal, teenage skin, especially those prone to greasiness and breakouts due to the absorbent and purifying nature. Although I’m past that teenage stage, it still works for me when I do get the occasional spot, but I can’t say Cupcake is one of my go-to’s out of the fresh face mask range. I do find it can be a little drying, so make sure you’re using a good moisturiser after if you find you’re in the same boat!

Check out Cupcake for yourself here, or head into your local Lush for a free consultation on which mask would be better for you!

Rosy Cheeks Fresh Face Mask

As the name suggests, this Fresh Face Mask is very much Rose based. Roses aren’t just beautiful flowers, the oil that the petals produce has numerous benefits for the skin.

Rosy Cheeks is quite a simple face mask. A blend of Rose, Calamine and Kaolin are basically the only ingredients meaning this mask is perfect for sensitive skins.

Kaolin, or China clay, is a naturally occurring porous soft clay rich in the mineral, kaolinite. Its ability to absorb moisture into itself means it is an excellent ingredient to support product formulas that are self-preserving, by hiding water within itself away from bacteria, yeasts or molds. It also absorbs the impurities from the skin making it an effective cleanser.

Calamine powder is mainly zinc oxide, a white powder, with a dash of iron oxide, combining to produce a pretty, light pink powder. It is a very gentle ingredient on the skin and has great cleansing and PH balancing qualities. However, it’s main benefit is that it’s incredibly (and gently) soothing and calming for the skin.

The main feature is of course the Rose. Rosy Cheeks contains Turkish rose in three forms. An oil, an infusion and in a clay. Roses are the Queen of Soothing and this is why this particular mask is perfect for anyone suffering with any irritation, any redness, sunburn or any sort of inflammation.

The scent of rose is used by aromatherapists to lift the mood and restore balance, Rosy Cheeks is gorgeously scented with a strong and almost powdery rose scent.

img_1908

Because of it’s really smooth clay-like texture it’s easily applied to the face and immediately starts the soothing action, especially when it’s taken directly from the fridge where it’s supposed to be stored. A great thing about Rosy Cheeks is that unlike most of Lush’s other masks, it doesn’t dry out that much or become flaky at all.

I really love this mask, it makes my skin feel so good after and is beautifully mattefying once washed off. It’s great for use in the summer to help with sunburn or when you’re feeling flushed.

Check it out on the website here.

Brazened Honey Fresh Face Mask

Brazened Honey is a great mask for a detox and for when you want to reawaken tired skin. It contains many ingredients designed to deeply cleanse, improve circulation and brighten the complexion.

This bright mustard coloured mask contains a multitude of Ayurvedic herbs and spices. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India and is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. A lot of the treatments are plant based, using herbs and spices.

Fresh Fennel is used for it’s antibacterial properties to cleanse the skin and is also very stimulating, getting the blood flowing to the skin, reawakening the complexion. Anti-inflammatory Ginger and soothing Clove Bud Oil are also effective stimulants.

Turmeric is added for it’s soothing and antioxidant qualities and Parsley, Coriander and Cardamom also feature to help purify the skin.

Other fantastic cleansing ingredients are Kaolin, Sage; Rosemary and Juniperberry Infusion and Fresh Lime Juice. Kaolin, which features in a lot of Lush’s fresh face masks makes up a majority of the base and draws out impurities. The infusion of the three botanicals is not only antiseptic but also help to balance the skin’s sebum production and refreshing Lime Juice brightens and eats away at any excess oils.

Brazened Honey also features Honey and Free-Range Eggs so sadly this product isn’t currently vegan. Honey is not only naturally anti-bacterial, it’s also incredibly moisturising, whilst protein rich Eggs contain lots of vitamin A which helps to maintain healthy skin by regulating sebum production.

img_1767

I love the feeling of my skin after using this face mask, it feels so smooth and polished due to it containing Ground Almond Shells to give a light exfoliation, but also because of the wonderful purifying ingredients. It really gives me a glow and is perfect for those sluggish mornings! Personally, I’m not a massive fan of the spicy, herbal scent but I can definitely look past if for the great benefits!

BB Seaweed Fresh Face Mask

The name of this Fresh Face Mask comes from when BBC presenters Anna Ryder Richardson and Charlie Dimmock came to the Lush factory to create a new product, and BB Seaweed was born.

BB Seaweed is a great mask for everyone as it has a multitude of benefits for all types of skin and is the perfect all rounder.

Don’t be put off by the colour or consistency, it’s grey, feels like wet clay and features little chunks of rose petals and seaweed in it but believe me it’s truly wonderful.

The first ingredient is Lime Tree Flower and Sweet Violet Leaf Decoction, these plants are mucilaginous, which makes them soothing when applied topically. BB Seaweed contains lots of other soothing ingredients such as Rosemary Oil, toning Rose Absolute, revitalising, mineral rich Toothed Wrack Seaweed and Seaweed Absolute and Aloe Vera Gel, all helping to calm down any redness or inflammation.

Cleansing clay based Kaolin works with antiseptic Honey to deeply cleanse the face, drawing out any impurities. It also contains mild exfoliants in the form of both Ground Almonds and Millet Flakes, helping to gently buff away dead skin cells.

Honey also helps to moisturise and protect the skin along with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

For those looking for a good mask to tone and tighten then this might be a good one to go for. Rosemary, Patchouli, Violet Leaf and Rose are all astringent, helping the pores to contract.

Whenever I use BB Seaweed my face feels remarkably softer, it’s my go to when simply, I just want my skin to feel extra nice. It isn’t drying whatsoever, nor does it add to any excess oils, in fact Bentone Gel and Rose should help to balance out any excess sebum issues. Perfect for those with ‘combination’ skin.

8fdd0ca7-1eb0-4bfd-9d50-5e2103717463

On the face, it is instantly soothing, especially when it’s taken straight from the fridge which is where it needs to be kept due to the completely fresh ingredients. It’s not particularly scented but it gets a natural scent from the earthy and herbal components.

I could go on and on talking about the benefits of this wonderful mask but you should definitely find out for yourself over on the Lush UK website here.
