Minamisoma Shower Oil

In 2011, Minamisoma, a small city in the Fukushima Prefecture in Japan was hit by a massive earthquake and a tsunami, resulting in a nuclear disaster. Most of its residents were evacuated and over five years later, in 2016, the residents were allowed to move back. In place of their ruined rice crops, the locals began growing crops of rapeseed instead. Rapeseed plants remove cesium from the soil and their seeds are turned into oil which is radiation free and safe to use. This way of naturally regenerating the land is truly incredible. Lush buy their Rapeseed Oil from this small city, giving a vital source of income to farmers who lost their livelihoods in the disaster.

Shower oils like Minamisoma provide a really mild cleanse, perfect for anyone who wants to cleanse without soap/lather and for gentle skin types. They can also be used like body conditioners as an in shower moisturiser. You simply stroke over the body and rinse away for clean and soft skin.

The Fukushima Rapeseed Oil is mixed with hydrating Cocoa Butter to form the product’s base. The design of this shower oil is actually meant to represent the fields of rapeseed plants (yellow half) growing in the hard hit land (white half). Containing more than 50% of omega 9 oleic acid, Rapeseed Oil is very moisturising and emollient on skin, and is said to have good antioxidant properties, which helps to firm the skin and boost its radiance. Included in this base is Sunflower Wax, which naturally thickens the formula and adds its own skin softening benefits.

Fresh Lemon Juice acts as the cleanser in this product as citrus fruits, especially lemons are high in enzymes that break down excess sebum, dirt and dead skin, paving the way for brighter and healthier looking skin. The large amounts of vitamin C occurring naturally inside the fruits are full of antioxidants and antibiotic properties. Turmeric Powder, which is responsible for creating the yellow colour on one side of the product also has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, as well as being soothing on the skin.

A strange new ingredient that I’ve not seen before is something called Kinako Powder, which is roasted organic soybean flour. When it is put in contact with warm water it creates a rich, softening milk that will really soothe the skin and alleviate irritation and redness.

Minamisoma is scented with the same scent as Avocado Co-Wash and is a scent that I find absolutely beautiful. Comprised of Litsea Cubeba, Bergamot and Olibanum Oils, it’s a fresh, zesty aroma but incredibly sweet and delightful at the same time. For their effects on the skin, both Litsea Cubeba and Bergamot are refreshing and toning and Olibanum is soothing.

I am really loving this product. Its perfect for those showers when you don’t necessarily need a deep clean as it effectively cleanses for a quick freshen up. Though I am preferring to use it as an in shower body moisturiser as I come out feeling smoother than a baby! It’s so great at locking in hydration. What’s more, the scent is so beautiful under the water and is really great for energising and lifting your spirits on a dreary morning. It also leaves a trace of it lingering on your skin after, which makes me so happy. I’m so glad Lush have made this a permanent fixture in all stores!

Carrot Shower Oil

The concept of a Shower Oil is an interesting one. They’re designed for those who like to wash without foam, which is why you won’t find any sulfates (lathering agents) in them. Although they’ve been around a while now, with the majority being exclusive to naked stores, this Easter exclusive is the first to appear in all stores across the country.

To ensure an effective cleanse, but without a lather, Lush have included an ingredient called Cocamidopropyl Betaine, which sounds scary and unnatural but is actually just derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil. It’s a very mild cleanser but it lifts dirt away without creating a lot of foam. Lush have also included some other ingredients that are wonderfully cleansing alongside it. Carrot contains Fresh Orange Juice which helps to keep the skin clean and rejuvenated. Cleansing with products that have oranges in them means you benefit from their vitamin and mineral content, as well as their astringent, antibacterial and antiseptic properties that gives the skin a healthy glow.

Lush say that you can use Carrot instead of shower gel/soap or use it for extra hydration after. Carrot contains amazingly beneficial ingredients that moisturise and condition the skin. Firstly, Carrot contains Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter and rich and protective Almond Butter. But Lush wouldn’t make a carrot-themed product without any actual carrot in it and this shower oil also contains Cold Pressed Carrot Seed Oil and Fresh Carrot that’s been extracted in Sunflower Oil. Carrots are rich in vitamin A and something called beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that helps to maintain the skin’s elasticity and brightness. Sunflower Oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E which make it ideal for dry and delicate skin as the oil is easily absorbed.

Carrot Shower Oil also has a wonderful scent. It’s a sherbety and fruity concoction of Sandalwood, Grapefruit and Geranium, as well as orangey notes from the aforementioned OJ. It’s nothing like what I though it would smell like, but I’m really liking it. Sandalwood is particularly beloved in skincare thanks to its soothing properties, and all three essential oils are known for being antiseptic. Geranium further helps to even out colour and oiliness by constricting the tissues to balance sebum production and circulation.

You literally use a shower oil like a bar of soap, by gliding it over your skin and rinsing away. It’s not going to give the deepest cleanse ever, but I personally found it nice for a quick freshen up in the shower and my skin was feeling soft and well-nourished after each use, not to mention it was smelling lovely. Although this product is great for someone who wants to stay away from sulfates and lather, I’m personally going to use it as more of a moisturiser predominately. But I’d definitely recommend trying it as a cleanser too to see if you like it.
