Hunny Bear Massage Bar

This bear shaped massage bar was initially released for Mothers Day last year and had the slightly different name of Honey Bear. This year, it was veganised, removing the honey it once contained and replacing it with Agave Syrup. To mark the difference, Lush also changed it’s name to Hunny Bear.

Agave Syrup comes from several species of plant, but most commonly blue agave and the blue agave plant is known as the Mexican tree of life and abundance. Like honey, the Aztecs used the agave nectar as a dressing for wounds because of its anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Also like honey, Agave Syrup is hydrating for the skin.

Although massage bars are designed for use in massage, people often use them simply as body moisturisers and because it’s very difficult to convince my partner to give me a massage, this is generally how I use them too. Containing Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter and Almond Oil, along with the Agave Syrup, Hunny Bear has everything you need to ensure soft and deeply moisturised skin.

In terms of scent, Hunny Bear has a warming, sweet fragrance that reminds me of baked caramel sponge and sticky toffee pudding. It contains Clove Leaf Oil, which has a spicy aroma, mixed with sweet Tonka and Vanilla Absolutes. It also features background notes of Vetivert Oil, which naturally has a smokey and grounding smell. I notice the earthiness of the Vetivert a lot more when I’ve just applied it to the skin interestingly, however after time it develops into the more well-rounded sweeter scent. Both Vetivert and Clove Leaf Oils are noted as having stimulating and warming effects on the skin, helping with muscular aches and pains.

I’m glad I got the chance to post about this product with it being back this year and it’s nice to see it being suitable for vegans! It just goes to show how easy it is to replace honey in a product and I’m sure we’ll see other products follow suit soon.

Wiccy Magic Muscles Massage Bar

As someone who considers themselves to be ~fairly~ active, I often get aches and pains from my muscles screaming at me for torturing them, so I’m always keen on trying products that will help relieve the tension and I’ve found that Wiccy Magic Muscles is one of the best!

As a massage bar, Wiccy is first and foremost a body moisturiser, being made with a base of Cocoa and Shea Butters, blended together along with Jojoba and Coconut Oils. I’ve definitely tried other massage bars that melt quicker and feel more moisturising than Wiccy, but it still gets that job done and leaves you with perfectly hydrated skin.

The main thing about this particular massage bar however, is its ability to help relieve muscular tension. As you can see from the pictures, Wiccy Magic Muscles is covered with embedded Aduki Beans on one side which act like firm fingertips when you’re smoothing  it over your skin, stimulating areas where the circulation is slow and reliving tension. The addition of Cinnamon Leaf Oil and Peppermint Oil compliments this texture by providing a warming, tingling feeling on the skin. Both these essential oils have been proven to cause stimulating effects on the sensory nerve endings and the blood flow, relieving any uncomfortable pain.

Because of these ingredients, Wiccy has a rather potent aroma. It’s a spicy, minty, almost chocolatey mix of smells that I know some people really hate, but I don’t really have much an opinion of, it’s the benefits I’m after with this one. I do find the powerful fragrance is great at clearing my sinuses though!

I love to use Wiccy to moisturise my skin once I’ve stepped out of the bath or shower; I use the plain bottom side to do this before turning the bar over and using the Aduki Bean side for more of a massage. You should feel the tingling, cooling sensation almost immediately and it feels so good on tired legs! You’ve really got to be careful not to apply too much pressure otherwise the bar will end up breaking like mine has and the beans don’t really help with holding it together. Whatsmore is that towards the end of the bar’s life, they will fall out and it does get annoying. But if you’ve got green fingers, plant them! You can grow your very own aduki bean plant!

For the first time the other day, I actually used a piece of Wiccy Magic Muscles in a foot bath. I melted a chunk down in some water and sat my feet in it for a good thirty minutes and it did wonders at cooling and moisturising them! I’ll definitely be doing that again!

You can check out Wiccy for yourself here over at the Lush UK website.

The Big Banana Massage Bar

Another one of Lush’s rather cheeky Valentine’s products is a massage bar called The Big Banana and is shaped like well, obviously a banana. Like with Aubergine, Peachy and others in the range, The Big Banana fits into the ‘fruits of love’ theme well.

Along with a standard Cocoa & Shea Butter base and Sumatran Coconut Oil, The Big Banana actually contains a great amount of rich and nourishing Fresh Banana too! Bananas are full of vitamins and minerals and are highly moisturising on the skin.

I love using massage bars at this time of the year when the weather is changing because it’s when my skin tends to be the driest. I found that although when first applying this particular one it left a lot of residue, it was really easily absorbed by my skin after massaging it in and it left me feeling perfectly hydrated.

This product is beautifully scented and I fell in love with it as soon as I first smelled it. The first thing you notice is definitely the spicy, herbal Clove Bud Oil, which gives a real feeling of warmth. It’s sweetened by Almond Essential Oil and Ylang Ylang Oil and then there’s a somewhat fruity note in the background from Brazilian Orange but it’s very muted amongst the others. I feel like it’s a more spicy, more fragrant Yog Nog aroma and I absolutely love it.  Although these ingredients are more for their smells, they also have added benefits to the skin as well. Clove Bud Oil is stimulating, boosting circulation to the skin; Ylang Ylang and Orange are toning, refreshing and anti-inflammatory and lastly Almonds are known for their protective qualities.

I feel like it’s actually a perfect product for a Valentines range as it’s sensual and spicy and really lifts the mood when it’s in use, not to mention it’s also a massage bar which is always better used with someone else!

I’ll be sad to see it go once stocks have run out but I feel like I can make mine last a good while, especially when I have so many other massage bars too!

Body, Massage Bars, Sparkle Jars

Twilight Sparkle Jar

Sparkle Jars first appeared for Christmas 2017 when Lush released them in both Twilight and Snow Fairy versions. Although from experience of working in store last Christmas where they didn’t seem immensely popular, Lush didn’t give up and bought them both back for this years range.

A Sparkle Jar is basically a massage bar, with a hidden compartment of dusting powder inside it. The idea is to glide the bar across your skin, leaving a train of moisturising oils behind and then afterwards lightly dusting with the powder for a subtle shimmer and extra softness.

Sparkle Jars feature two little indents on their lids, which you need to prick with a pencil or any sharp object so they form holes and allow the powder to come out.

Aptly crescent moon-shaped Twilight Sparkle Jar, of course, features the heavenly lavender scent of the Twilight/Sleepy family, which is one of the most relaxing scents Lush have ever created. Lavender has been used for centuries in relaxation techniques and to ease the mind from worry and although slightly herbal in scent naturally, it’s sweetened here with the addition of Tonka and Ylang Ylang.

I find that the outside Cocoa Butter casing is a lot less oily than most of Lush’s massage bars and can take a little while to warm up and get going, especially on colder days. However, when it does it is expertly moisturising and nourishing. Lavender is also perfect for soothing any irritation you may have on the skin.

The inside dusting powder is Twilight scented too, in a more powdery form and oddly, somewhat less sweet. It’s a mix of mainly highly absorbent Tapioca Starch, Lavender Powder and Chamomile Powder so is also perfect for soothing and calming inflamed skin.

Both the case and the powder contain a large amount of glitter, leaving a faint purply-silver glow after use.

Obviously, because the Sparkle Jars are hollow inside and are comprised of a bottom part with a lid attached, they can be delicate, so just handle with care and don’t apply too much pressure when using because they contain a whole lot of messy powder and you don’t want it to break on you!

I can’t say I’m a massive fan of the Sparkle Jars, I think they are great as gifts and as Christmas novelty items but I doubt I’ll be coming back for more once I’ve finished mine up as I’d rather use both a massage bar and a dusting powder as separate items.

Holly Berry Massage Bar

New for the 2018 Holiday Season, Holly Berry is a beautifully skin softening massage bar decorated with holly leaves and berries, a very typical and festive Christmas image.

img_0215.jpg

As soon as you pick up this particular bar, you can immediately tell just how moisturising it’s going to be. It’s almost slippery to the touch, and in fact, when I first came across it I genuinely believed it was going to be a bath oil because of just how oily it felt!

The base is made up of a whole lot of butters. Specifically Cocoa Butter, Illipe Butter, Murumuru Butter and Mango Butter; also Coconut Oil, making Holly Berry incredibly conditioning and softening. Mangoes make a luxurious butter that has damage-repairing properties due to the fruit being filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Particularly useful on scarring, stretch marks and sun damaged skins.

It glides on so smoothly and leaves behind a noticeable trail of silky soft oils on your skin which you can then rub and massage into your body. Or even better, get someone else to do it for you! The oils in this particular bar are so easily absorbed by the skin it’s perfect for a deep tissue massage.

Holly Berry also features a bright, uplifting scent of Bergamot, Buchu and Tangerine Oils with the sweet aroma of the Mango Butter too. To me, it’s rejuvenating Tangerine that hits you before the others, providing a sweet, citrus fragrance that the fruit is known for. Buchu, which is similar to blackcurrant is known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties and gives a fruity vibe to the product. Antiseptic Bergamot rounds the scent off by adding to the uplifting and brightening smell.

Though I’m not a massive fan of citrus scents, I can really get behind this one due to it being more fruity and sweet than overly citrusy. Though the feeling on my skin after, is undoubtably the biggest pro and I actually think this is one of the more underrated products of this year’s Christmas range and is one you should definitely try before they go!

Therapy¿ Massage Bar

One of Lush’s most famous massage bars, Therapy¿ is a gentle classic. With a lovely short list of purely natural and organic ingredients it’s perfect for those with sensitive skin.

To use a massage bar you simply glide it over the skin and the butters and oils melt with the body’s temperature and lay gently on the surface of the skin, then you simply massage it in (or preferably get someone else to do it for you!).

With a base of aerated Cocoa and Shea butters, Therapy¿ is perfectly moisturising for your body, leaving your skin incredibly soft.

Did you know that one in four babies are born with an outie belly button? That’s where the design of Therapy¿ comes from. It features three little holes and one rounded lump on the top of it. The ingredients of Therapy¿ are perfect for helping reduce the appearance of stretch marks and a lot of new mum’s come in our store buying this massage bar for just that.

As already mentioned Cocoa and Shea Butters condition and soften the skin, Sweet Orange and Neroli Oils are great for their toning effects on the skin which helps improve it’s texture, and Lavender Oil is proven to be soothing and calming.

These essential oils combine into a sweet, floral scent which is cheerful and uplifting. Neroli has been proven to increase serotonin levels in the brain and Lavender is the perfect relaxant. Therapy not just for your skin but for your mind too!

Therapy¿ is a little less oily than some of Lush’s other massage bars, so she takes a little while longer to really get going but once she does, it’s a beautiful feeling. Once warmed up, this bar glides so smoothly over the skin leaving noticeable moisture and hydration which is then easily worked into the skin. On the top side you can use the extra little bump as a useful aid to a more sensual massage.

After use, you’re left with perfectly moisturised, soft and brighter skin. The scent also lasts for a long time and I can always smell it on my sheets or clothes after using it!

Like all of Lush’s products with a buttery base this massage bar does come with a melt warning, so make sure you aren’t storing yours somewhere where it’s going to get too warm!
