Curl Power Curl Pudding

Okay real talk. My hair is straight, thin, flat and definitely not dry, so a product called ‘Curl Power’ definitely isn’t targeted to someone with my hair. I actually bought a pot of this for a friend whilst visiting the new spa store in Liverpool and in true reviewer spirit, I had to try it for myself too.

Curl Power is designed to help style afros and curls, whilst hydrating and protecting the hair at the same time. It features a gorgeous biscuity and caramel-like scent with a hint of coconut that strongly reminds me of coconut macaroons.!

The main two ingredients in Curl Power are Linseed Gel and Molasses. Linseeds are rich in proteins, minerals, vitamins and oils making it a great component in a haircare product. The gel Linseeds produce when boiled is highly protective and locks moisture into the hair. Molasses is a thick, black tar like substance which is a byproduct from a long process of making sugar. On the hair, it’s very similar to the effects of honey, helping to retain moisture and giving a gorgeous shine.

Where both of those ingredients are added to help lock moisture in, you obviously need ingredients that actually add the moisture too. Often curly and afro hair tends to be dryer so it’s fitting that Curl Power offers a lot of hydrating and moisturising effects. Cocoa Butter is combined with Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil, Coconut Oil, Soya Lecithin and Lanolin to really add hydration. Argan Oil has many benefits for the hair as it is naturally soothing, conditioning and full of antioxidant vitamins. The high levels of fatty acids it contains are wonderful at deeply hydrating the hair. Argan Oil is also known for its restoring and repairing qualities. Soya Lecithin is a fatty substance that occurs naturally in soybeans and Lanolin is known as ‘wool wax’ and is obtained by pressing shorn sheep’s wool. Both are highly emollient and protective, deeply locking in moisture.

We aren’t stopping there as Curl Power contains a number of other impressive ingredients too, it would seem Lush have really pushed the boat out with this one. Silken Tofu & Aquafaba are added for their softening effects and also because they are full of proteins, perfect for strengthening damaged hair. Hydrolysed Wheat Gluten is also full of proteins which will increase the tensile strength of the hair to make it less susceptible to breakage. It also adds volume, texture and condition to the hair, preventing it from drying out and helping to define those curls.

Coconut Vinegar is made by fermenting coconut sap and water for up to a year. This little-known culinary ingredient gives hair gloss, shine and a soft texture. It is also nutrient and amino acid rich – perfect for keeping the hair strong! Ethyl Macadamiate, derived from macadamia nuts, coats each hair strand and adds protection against heat and humidity, allowing your curls to stay bouncy and light. Lastly, Curl Power contains PVP to give some hold.

After trying a tiny amount in my own freshly washed, towel dried hair, it actually made it feel so soft and hydrated. There was a very slight hold but you don’t get any of that hard, crispy effect you can get with some hair styling products. It didn’t weigh my hair down that much either, something I’m always really concerned about when trying out new haircare, especially ones that are so rich with ingredients; it even gave it some volume surprisingly! What’s more, the scent really lingers and I could smell it around me all day!

Now I’m probably not the best person to really give an honest review of this product, just because it’s not designed for someone like me. But, I have heard some really good reviews from others with different hair types and coupled with my own experience, I reckon this is a really great product!

Dear John Coffee Shampoo Bar

As someone who uses stimulating shampoos and hair products such as New, Wasabi Shan Kui and Roots, I’ve often wondered why Lush don’t have a coffee-based shampoo bar as apparently caffeine is one of the best ingredients to promote hair growth and you so often see it used by other brands in their products. Cue the arrival of Dear John, a limited edition coffee-based shampoo bar.

The Dear John scent is an excellent fragrance to choose for a coffee shampoo as Lush actually describe it as having notes of coffee itself, without actually containing the ingredient; it’s actually Cedarwood, Clove, Vetivert and Coriander that make up the scent.

Why coffee is so often used in hair products is because of its caffeine content. It’s widely known that caffeine is an effective stimulant on the brain, but it has the same effect on the hair follicles too, increasing the blood flow to the area and encouraging hair growth. Caffeine also blocks the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a key player in causing male-pattern baldness. Lush have added both Caffeine Powder as well as Ground Coffee to this shampoo bar. The coffee grains actually act as an exfoliant on the scalp, removing buildup on the scalp and dead skin cells. Plus, every time you scrub away the dead skin, new cells will push out thicker, stronger hair.

As well as the coffee, the ingredients of the actual Dear John scent also have great effects on the hair. Cedarwood is antiseptic and balancing, helping control oil production whilst Coriander, Clove and Vetivert are all known to have stimulating effects too, boosting the overall desired effect of the product.

Other than its stimulating effects, Dear John is actually a great shampoo for adding shine  to the hair too. Coffee is more acidic than the hair’s natural oils which encourages the hair cuticles to remain flat, thereby reflecting more light than usual. Dear John also contains Molasses, which is very similar to honey in the way it helps to retain moisture into the hair and gives it a gorgeous glow and shine.  Lastly, Dear John Coffee Shampoo Bar contains Aloe Vera Extract, which is soothing and calming. Perfect for any irritation you may be coping with on your scalp.

After using this shampoo bar in the shower, I’ve definitely noticed it’s slightly more hydrating than New Shampoo Bar and smells so good when it’s in use. The ground coffee can take a while to totally wash out but it’s not hugely annoying. I notice my hair is a lot more sleek and shiny each time I wash with it. Sadly I can’t really say if it’s really helping with my hair growth as I’m using so many products that all have that same benefit, so it’s too difficult to say. I am loving using it though, that’s for sure.
